It works after the first try, too. What you describe used to be
precisely my problem. This has been overcome now.
It does (rarely) happen that the drop down list with the last used
commands in the HUD doesn't respond. This can be overcome by a new
search, after that also the drop down list works a

This was fixed sometime back Julyish a side-effect of the rewrite that
occurred when converting the backend to a GMenu for 13.10.
Confirmed to work properly in 13.10.0+13.10.20131011-0ubuntu1. Tested
with both seconds showing and not showing in the indicator's time
string.

Glad it's working for you guys. All I know is that unity8 AP had only 2
failures before I upgraded HUD, and then wouldn't run properly after I
upgraded hud. Tried it a few ways, updating certain packages and then

FYI I had this problem twice or three times, I had to make the settings with
CompizConfig Settings Manager like described.
sudo apt-get install cssm
That solved all in the end.
After that I have not experienced this problem again. (Maybe caused by a
powerfailuere back then?!)
