I purged cinnamon (including Nemo), and that seems to have fixed the
problem.

I have a similar problem (ubuntu 12.04-3), it occurred after upgrading
the linux kernell to 3.8.0-32-generic. I tried different video drivers,
but doesnt seem to help. Cinnamon works fine.
The odd thing is, sometimes it happens sometimes it doesnt, I started my
