I have a similar-looking problem after some update in Ubuntu 12.10, persisting after an upgrade to 13.04. Reproduces on 3.8.0-33, 3.5.0-43, 3.5.0-40 and 3.5.0-40, so it might be not directly related to the kernel version. I'm also on an AMD card, Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Caicos [Radeon

Just a quick update. I had a couple of days last week where I didn't have this problem. However, I do have it this morning and I have rebooted (actually shut down and booted) literally about 6 times and get the problem each time. Am thinking of upgrading to 13.10. -- You received this bug notific

Mmm, I have 12.04 at home on my laptop and have not had the problem, I will check and see that kernel level it is, though I normally apply updates when they are offered. I have experimented a little more today. I powered off and waited a few minutes, then on again and no smearing, even having star

It's now Thursday morning and I worked at home yesterday. When I powered on my work PC this morning I did not have the problem, though my desktop background is blank/black (it should be an image). I checked my mail and opened Firefox, and periodically checked my desktop and all was fine - no smeari

It is Monday morning and I have just started my PC. The desktop came up as a blue gradient which is what I set it to as part of my testing last week - rather than just a black background.
