This one is killing me. I also use 1366x768, but I remember seeing the
shortcut display once, so I couldn't figure out how I broke it! Once I
saw this thread, I realized that I've only seen it on the TV display, so
I plugged in my HDMI cable to the big TV screen. I still can't get it
to display.
Yes, I had enabled workspaces. When I disable workspaces the problem
goes away. I didn't notice it before.

Have you enabled the workspaces? In that case the overlay might not fit
the resolution.

My notebook has a 1366x768 screen - it is a very common resolution. When
I boot Ubuntu 14.04 liveISO the keyboard shortcuts overlay is displayed
and works very well - therefore my screen resolution is good enough for
