I’ll add my two cents. The scarcity of positions is absolutely nothing new.
In the 1980’s it was not unusual for there to be 300-400 applicants or more for
positions in any kind of organismal biology. It was during that decade that
doing a post-doc in ecology became the norm as a holding plac

about as arrogant a statement as I have read. It is that kind of thinking that
has made me distance myself from much of the ESA community. I have authored or

Here's the list of notable species (weird, big, small, edible, parasitic etc) I
developed for my botany course a few years ago. I gave only the genus and
species and let the students figure out what they were.
