I just finished the KPA100 for my K2 this week. The K2 and associated
accessories were purchased within the last month. Without the KPA100, I get
10W or more on each band. Most bands provide about 15W, but 10M barely makes
the 10W rated output with about 10.5W. I think the K2 is just fine.

The first K2 I built has been working great for over a year. All of a sudden
the best it would do is about 7/10 watt below 10mhz and nothing above.
The 100 watt section has been removed and get the same results. Also getting HI
CUR.
My first guess would be final related. The nuts on the case
Rich,
First question - is your KPA100 wattmeter properly calibrated? If not, this
can be the single source of your problem.
Second question - how are you determining power output? The K2 power display
will be from different sources when you add and remove the KPA100. If you are

like-new condition, extremely clean and works great! Pics available on request.

H. Working now. Not sure why !
Everything looks good. Might be wise to get a new set of thermal pads for
the finals as they are looking a little frazzled after a few bottom cover
removals. Guess we will just have to keep an eye on it.
Thanks,

I was listening to 40 meters late last night (virtually no one there so
I had some time to fool around with the rig) and noticed the level of
audio hiss in the K2. With RF gain off completely and AF gain fully
advanced, there is a fair amount of hiss. This is also noticeable at
operating levels

Thanks for the reply. I have a pretty decent Daiwa power meter. It tracks
very well on the other bands and matches the displayed power output of the K2.
I think the power level displayed by both the K2 and the Daiwa meter are
correct. I do have a decent scope that I could use to verify
Hey guys, here's the next (of many) questions.
How heavily used is the DMM during K2 building? I just finished my
first two mini-modules and used the DMM only a little - for resistance
checks. I've scanned through the K2 manual and it looks like a DMM is
used here there for resistance checks

Rich,
Yes, it is easy to scan the KPA100 LPF with the MFJ259 or any other antenna
analyzer - and that would be the first step. Remove the AUX RF connector from
the K2 RF Board and insert a 51 ohm resistor leads into the connector going to
the KPA100 - then connect the analyzer to the SO239

Howard and all,
To throw my observation into the mix, with AF gain full clockwise and RF
full ccw, I hear

This Sunday evening, the Flying Pigs Amateur Radio Club International
will be holding its monthly Run For The Bacon. This is a friendly, two
hour QRP CW Sprint, which is open to ALL radio amateurs, will last from
9:00 - 11:00PM EST (0200-0400 UTC Monday).
You may work stations once per band
Idiom Press makes an external SCAF-based audio filter that does an
excellent job of eliminating hiss, among other things. The web site
http://www.idiompress.com has demo .wav files.
The Standard Disclaimer does NOT apply in this case...

Folks,
I may be missing something here, but with my understanding of SO2R
operation, one would not want to mute the receive K2 so that you could scan
for other stations while the transmit K2 is CQing or doing some other
semi-automated transmit task. In this situation, the solution would be to
Hi Dave,
I usually check the band up from the bottom, with a careful tune started
about 3555 to 3565.
And I like to check about the time sunrise or sunset starts across the
country, but especially near my own greyline, currently.
I've heard it said that on 80, there are a number of stations
Cary,
I don't have any really good ideas about what may be wrong (other than to
simply say its broke G), but I suggest that you turn the manual to
Appendix E and follow the steps outlined in the Receiver Signal Tracing
section.
As another alternative, you can try the Cheap and Dirty Signal

Looking at the Rob Sherwood's receiver data table
http://www.sherweng.com/table.html
I discovered a remarkable fact: the K2's weakest point is the FILTER
ULTIMATE REJECTION. Sherwood says it is 80 dB only (and there are two
K2s) and it was confirmed by one of our top grade contesters and
Hi
According to the note (f) on that measurement, It is phase noise limited
I dont know what the measurement criteria were, when Sherwood did the
filter ultimate rejection tests
KI6WX did some phase noise measurements.
