Good Evening,
Another fine week has slipped past. The weather here in Oregon has
really started to turn. My daffodils are almost done blooming. Yes, they
bloomed for almost two full months. In the valley they've been gone for
quite a while. This week finally turned ours into seed pod
Why not have both?:) Actually, its all a matter of what features one
needs most and the type of building experience wanted.
K3 appears to have been designed to be the best competative full
featured HF + 6M or contest rig possible that could be assembled,
aligned, and repaired by the user from
Doug,
I've done the same comparison. But what you have to remember is that the K2
and K3 are designed for two different purposes. The K2 is a great portable
all-in-one self contained radio for taking out to the field. The K3 is
designed as a top line contesting/dx rig that is portable enough fo
Hope I've done the math correctly.

KSB2 $ 99

K60XV $ 89

KDSP2$229
KIO2$ 89
Total $1,213

Van,
You are correct. The front phones jack is a 1/4-in plug and the phones on
the back panel is 1/8-in.
Another interesting feature is that you can plug headphones into both jacks
at the same time. So when contesting, if you want to have an additional set
of ears listening you can.

I'm offering this just on the off-chance you haven't tried it.
Sometimes the noise level that roars out of the speaker with the AF gain

David,
To test, turn on the preamp and tap Q21 with a screwdriver tip - you can
tell when the sharp 'clicking' with each tap is taken out by the KNB2.
There is not a lot of circuitry on the KNB2, so I suggest that you check
all the components for correct values, and in the right positions. M

A question for Elecraft, when y'all have time ;<)) :
It's a little bit of a guess looking at the picture, but the phone jack on
the front panel appears to be a 1/4" type rather than the 1/8" size found on
the K2, while the jack on the rear panel appears to be a 1/8" jack. Is this
the case?
Don - On the K3 you can enable and disable the mic bias to pin 1 from
the menu, so it will work both with our microphones and any other
dynamic mic.
Also we have added more microphone input gain (adjustable) so operation
with the Heil HC4/5 mic's will be no problem.

Joe,
First check your meter - does it show zero ohms (or a very very low
value) when you touch the probes together?
The last two checks indicate the resistance through the low pass filter
toroids only, did you strip and tin the toroid leads adequately.
If you look at the schematic for the 2
Barry,
I believe the K3 comes permanently wired for the Elecraft microphones,
and that means there is a resistor between 5 volts and pin 1 (AF). If
one wants to use a microphone that would object to having that voltage
present on pin 1, a series DC blocking capacitor should be used.

Perhaps we should close this OT thread before Eric barks :-)

But I'm confident Elecraft have thought of this...

I just completed alignment part 1 on K2 #6105. Everything looks
great, but I can only get the AGC threshold adjusted to 3.77 volts.
Seems like it's probably not a big deal, but I wanted to check.

Thanks for the additional information in the FAQ about microphones.
But I still have a question.
The wiring for the K2 MD-2, MH-2 microphones and the Heil headset has 5V
applied to pin 1 through a 5.6k resistor.
Will the K3 be able to supply 5V on pin 1 through a 5k resistor via a

Although I have not myself had any serious "hands on" experience with the
Tayloe mixer, from private correspondence exchanged several years ago I
understand that the Tayloe while being a good performer in terms of IIP3 is
not as "good" as the H-Mode. I have the comparative data in France along
