Thanks for the input Dave. It sounds like a good solution.
But I'm curious: Why does lifting the ground leg of the regulator and
'inserting' a diode in series compromise the regulator's short circuit
protection? Does it require a direct connection to ground?

Dave,
If you jack up the the type of 8V regulator used in the K2 by adding a
diode in series with the regulators ground lead, have you found any sign of
oscillation at the regulator's 8V output terminal? Also, if my memory is
working properly, the regulator's ground lead is connected to its

I tried to answer your last message about using the 5-V regulator to reduce the

Gary,
This evening I set about doing the grounding to the mic socket as you

I am pretty happy that this issue which

How hot does your K3/100 PA run?
And how hot is safe?
I was sitting in a pileup at 90 watts and watching the PA Temp - it got up to
around 41 or 42 C (about 100 F) so I turned the fan up a notch or two and it
cooled right back down to around 20 C (70 F).

Hank,
I don't know how hot is safe for the K3 PA devices, but I would believe
your 42 deg C is OK.
I am going to go out on a limb and make some assumptions - that the PA
transistors are operating at 65% efficiency, that they are rated for the
normal commercial operating temperature of 125

Denis,
I can only think of two likely reasons that your headphones work but your
speaker doesn't.:
1) Remove the top panel on your K2 and look for a connector on the front
right side of the radio (close to the on/off switch). It is labeled SPKR
and P5. Make sure the connector is connected and

We will let the heatsink get up to 85C before dropping the KPA3

to keep it cool if you don't mind the added fan noise. Fortunately the

Not sure if the question was answered.
To turn the fans on manually: CONFIG KPA3: VFO A from PA nor to Fn

The setting sticks when you come out of CONFIG and through a power ON/OFF
cycle.

Hi all,
One of the first things I noticed with the K3 was that the preamplifier
seemed quite noisy compared to my old IC-718. With the IC-718 connected to a
dummy load, the noise level rose an estimated 3dB or so but with the K3 I
estimated at least twice that. Recent measurements using the

Hank,
I had exactly the same thing happen to me in WPX as I pushed F1. In my case
the fan never went on though but the temp leveled off at about 47C.
However, in my case, the power shutdown went in and, on 40m, the xcvr seemed
