I have a new clue.
I turned the power down to low power levels. The RF meter switches to
..5...10 mode. I now get RF bars when speaking or tapping the mic.
If I turn up the power while speaking the RF meter switches to ...50...100
and I drop back to one bar.

You have to pull the KRX3 because the screw that holds the filter in
place is not accessible without removing the board from its shielding
enclosure
There is a shield that surrounds the RF receiver board that the filters are
mounted to.
The KRX3 has a few other boards that remain in place, but the main shielded
RF board has to come out to change filters.
With practice the shielded board comes out very quickly.

Hello Barry,
If you connected the SM20's Pin 2 (+8V DC Input) to K3 front panel Mic Pin 6
(8V Output) then the SM20 internal preamp will provide mic bias to the SM20
electret element. That's how I wired my SM20 and it works great on the K3.
No additional Mic Bias is required.

Do you have power per band set in your configuration? If so you may not have
advanced the power on 40m. Simply turn the power knob on 40m and make sure
you have it set to your desired value.
The first time I turned that option on, all of the bands defaulted to some
very low level (0.5?). It's v
