Hi Bill,
Yes I agree that it would take a considerable discharge to cause a problem
of this type, however this incident took place during a severe gale, without
any lightning in the area, during a CQ WW. It is a moot question whether the
wind plus rain resulted in the tree becoming charged
Ron hits it on the head... It all depends.
Most of the problems seen here have to do with legacy hardware and software,
or non-Microsoft software. I'd say by far there have been more issues with
Vista Home versions than Vista 64.
The major problem for Hams is legacy items. Part of that debate

Thanks Julius,
A really great suggestion! putting them in on the other side.
Yes, well, I pulled the board last night and read the diodes with my DVM

They read .004 both directions.
A pretty good indicator that they were blown open.
So I replaced them with 1N914 diodes.
But the unit

I has a look at the ECS website but did not find useful informations.

Robert,
You are not likely to find any measurable voltage on VOL1, VOL2 or
VOL3. This will be a low level audio signal, so unless you have a
sensitive oscilloscope, you are likely to see zero or quite close to
that (note that the DC voltage table says .02 volts, but with an * on
it). Any DC

Folks,
My recommendation to those who have legacy applications and hardware to
support is to obtain a computer and a copy of Windows 2K pro and put it
on a computer that will be used in the ham shack (dual boot if you have
to). Most DOS programs will run in the DOS-box, and it will support
Dieter,
A quick guess - the new crystal is more loose and a single crystal can
be pulled (frequency shifted) more easily than the older crystals that
needed to use 2 crystals in parallel for 'de-Q' purposes.

One thing to add, you can right click on an EXE application and run it in
compatibility mode on 2000 or XP. Using the professional editions of XP
brings into play more options in the OS.

Hi,
I was considering a K144XV for my K3, and noticing the noise figure
listed as 2db, while the earlier transverters list NF at 0.8db. I'm
wondering how the two compare.
I also wonder if maybe in the future there might be a low-NF xvtr for
the K3? I like the integration idea, but I'm wondering
I think additional losses inside the K3 probably account for the higher NF.
But if you're really doing weak signal work the preamp belongs at the antenna
anyway.

I understand that the XV-series of transverters work just dandy with
the K3. There shouldn't be any reason to design new external
transverters specifically for

Are you sure the preamp state is the same for both receivers? Remember
it is band-specific. (I was caught by this once. :=)

Guys,
Keep in mind that the XV144 stand-alone transverter only covers the bottom
2MHz (144-146) of the band and would be great for weak signal work with
either the K2 or K3 because of its low noise figure higher power whereas the
internal K144XV for the K3 covers the entire 144-148 MHz band
I believe with some of the newer firmware, 3.03 and later, the K3 will cover
above 30 MHz which would allow a standard XV144 to cover the full 4 Mhz.
just as the k144xv will. Not sure how much IF rolloff there is but for FM,
I'm sure it's better than any FM only rig!

I have the audio level disparity, but don't consider it a problem.
I use my 2nd receiver to monitor 6M for openings. It has a simple
1/4 wave vertical on it and the main receiver has a 5el NBS yagi at
