My two-year old K3/100 developed an intermittent power problem. At first I had
the PA in and out a couple of times thinking it was the reported connector pin
problem. No luck. I noted that pushing on the KANT3 board that is used with
no ATU would "fix" the problem for a time. "Fix" meaning it

Using a stereo jack as RS232 is quite common. I have some number of
non-Elecraft devices that do that, including Microham boxes. It does
preclude use of RTS and DTR for anything. All has to be done in the
ASCII stream, but it has worked just fine.

The dimensions are for the enclosure, less projections.
Same control knobs as the ones used for the K3 function encoders.
The VFO knob is brand new and lower profile than the K3's. In fact it
might work as a K3 VFO B knob :) It has a rubber band and is styled
the same as the K3's VFO A knob.

I would look first for a low voltage under load situation. Maybe a power
connector has worked loose.
The VFO frequency is normally saved during the controlled shutdown process
initiated by pressing the K3 front panel power button. Pulling the plug
doesn't give the firmware a chance to save the VF
That happens to me occasionally when I pull a little too much current from
my old 20 amp power supply which goes into current limit, shuts down for a
few milliseconds, and then starts again after the K3 has crashed. It
happens so fast that it is not apparent what has happened.
Just a thought.
Have you checked your power supply connections? Or the power supply
itself? My K2/100 was doing that in SSB at high power, upgraded to a
better supply and problem disappeared.

Sounds like you may have problem with your power supply. Monitor power supply
voltage while you key the rig, see if it stays correct. If it does, check the
power cable and see if the APP connectors are fully engaged and not just
partially inserted. Try to key it with reduced power output level

that is OK in receive but as soon as transmit current starts to flow the
voltage drops low enough to shut off the K3.

when I put key down, the rig shuts off completely. When turning back on, it

Oh, I do understand the UC3906 charge controller. Its bulk charge is a
constant current source, which means the voltage is not controlled
(except by the battery). Once the voltage reaches the V12 point, it
goes into an overvoltage charge until the current drops to a defined

That's simply not true. There is a lot of information on the web about battery
charging and care, particularly from manufacturers. Yet this thread and others
about battery charging are full of, frankly, lousy information.
It's not unusual to do equalization charges on wet batteries at over 15V.
I use the Gmail client for email. Even with a pile of 70 or 80
messages, I can use the J and X hot keys to go down the list and mark
entire threads for deletion in less than 60 seconds. It's limited by
how fast I can read the titles. I click on the delete button and all
that remains is stuff I am
