This Fred will second the other Fred. My engineering team designed a
solar system for 4 repeater stations for a pipeline communications
system in S. Africa. It was hugely overdesigned, we had to to meet the
contract specs. In full sun, it made over 200A, way more than the wet
glass batteries
Jim:
Be careful what you ask for. Solar arrays are not rated for average.
Probably because there is no such thing as an average sun. I'd like to say
they are rated for peak power but that is somewhat illusionary too. How much
power you actually get from an array depends on many things. You will wa
Dan,
A problem like that could be either RF board U1 or the Control Board U6.
OR, it could be that the prior owner turned the VFO knob in an attempt
to move from one band to another (that does not work on the K2 although
the VFO display might indicate otherwise).
First try using Direct Freque
Bought a used not working K2 and have fixed most problems, but, I have low
(MW) output on 15/17 and 12/10M. I have traced the problem to K6 latching in
the wrong position. When it is supposed to be latched for the 15/17M BPF it
is in the 12/10M position and latches in the 15/17 position when in 12/

You said 'everything is grounded' -- but does that include the computer?
Laptops may be difficult to ground because of plastic cases, but perhaps
a screw somewhere in the enclosure can provide a grounding point. The
key is not necessarily 'grounding', but instead bonding all components

It could be the laptop's external power adapter. Try using the laptop on its
internal battery and see if the noise abates. If it does then perhaps some
clamp-on ferrite cores on the power adapter cable(s) will reduce or
eliminate the noise. A slightly over sized core will allow you to wrap the

Never noticed it because while setting up the kx3 I was also setting
everything up on my computer. I am a new ham and was getting the logging
software etc all set up. I recently was using the kx3 without the computer
plugged in and the computer was on the other side of the room. I had very

Rather than reinvent the wheel, does anybody have experience or suggestions for
a small solar array sufficient to keep a KX3 with internal batteries going
during daylight? I would assume 10 watts average over a reasonable TX duty
cycle would be enough.? Something strong enough or flexible enough
Cross-posted Elecraft and QRP-L. For sale: KIO2 module for the K2. New,
in original packaging, with instructions, not opened, not inventoried.
Revision B. Bought new for $99.95 plus shipping. Will sell for $85.00
including Priority Mail postage and insurance to a U.S. address.
Full disclosure:
My condolences to Phil's family and his many friends.
I have never met Phil in person, but we have had many very pleasant
email exchanges in the past. Our last conversation was around the
building of a custom cable adapter to allow him to use his microphone
with the KX3. I hope he had many pl
I'm very sorry to hear of Phil's passing. My condolences to Diane and

I'm sure you'll be able to operate that dream station in honor of Phil's
true spirit and make him proud.

Hi all,
As you may know, the KX3's NR (noise reduction) can only be adjusted in the RX
NR menu entry at present. There are three parameters (beta/B, decay/D, mix/M),
and these are stored separately for CW and voice modes.
We will soon be adding single-knob control of noise reduction. That is, w
I use ICE (Industrial Communications Engineers) suppressors mounted on a
ground rod at the feed entry point to the house. It is a very low
resistance to ground at DC, they seem to be doing a good job.

For those that have recently had some static/electric damage. I have been
very happy with the Array Solutions AS-303U Lightning Protector with SO-239
and the Array Solutions AS-8SP for my control cable to my Stack Match

There is another mechanism in the MCU that helps do that, but it is not
always effective - that is the CAL CUR setting.
It must be set to 3.50 Amps for a K2 with a KPA100, and often the K2
will show HiCurr when the wattmeter diodes fail.
The problem I see with that is many users continue to opera

Tommy,
You are going to need a K2PAKIT from Elecraft. That kit includes a
matched set of PA transistors (replace both) as well as replacements for
Q11 and Q13 (also replace both). After you install Q11 and Q13, but
before you install Q7 and Q8, check the voltage on the base solder pads

Yup,
When I worked for Sperry Univac we used to call that "reducing the mean
time between failure". Not just lightning though, not following anti-static
precautions can have the same effects. The kit doesn't last in working
condition for as long as it should do.

Lighting is one of those things that keeps on giving in many ways as far as
the electronic components in your radio. You may be able to replace XYZ
items and it fixes the problem for now, it's the thing's that it weakens
that all do not show up at the same time but continue to fail. That is

Speaking of power-up, would it be possible to add the facility to run a
user-specified macro automatically at power-up? (As an option, of
course.)
