Roney,
If it is an auto-ranging meter, it is okay. 1 just means open, which is
greater than 100k ohms. If it is not an auto-ranging meter, make sure you
select a range that will measure at least up to 100k ohms. Again, 1 would
be okay.

Nice explanation Al. It's nice to know that the K3 ranks high on the
charts, but I agree that 'usability' and 'listenability' are underrated.
Before I purchased my K3, I went to AES in Wickliffe and listened to
several receivers. I liked the sound of the Kenwoods, but I liked the
'modularity' of
Although I really like using a panadapter, which I made from a Softrock
Lite II for $21.00 and an external USB sound card for about $50.00, it was
a lot of fun using my K1 during a recent NAQCC sprint. Panadapters are
nice, but not absolutely necessary in my opinion.

Enrico,
How old is your K3? I believe they made a change to increase the output on
the "newer" units. I'm not sure which serial number this began on, but
mine has the higher output, and it is serial number 43XX.

Clay,
The FM filter will work for both AM and FM. That's what I chose. Also, I
would (did) just get the 400Hz CW filter.

I just make sure I have the K3 connected to a dummy load.

Jorge,
I went the cheapest route, and it works quite well. I use a softrock lite
II which cost $21. I needed a stereo sound card for my laptop, so I
ordered a USB sound card for around $14 from Amazon. I later changed to a
Xonar U5 sound card, which cost $60 after a $10 rebate. It is a better

Gil,
When I bought my K3-100, the only thing I added was the 400 Hz filter, and
that seemed to work out well for me. Later, I added the KXV3A and the 13

I use the MFJ-1026 noise canceler. It works well on 14 MHz and above, but
not as well on 7 MHz and below. I have noise from a toaster around 14.05

power line noise. Make sure you use a good noise pickup antenna, not the
The K1-2 is $299.95. You must be considering another $250 worth of
options. When I built mine, the only option I ordered was the LCD
