most people I have heard running a 23 or 32 ot 43 foot vertical all use
a 4:1 and a 1:1 inline...
I hvae also been reading articals where a 5.1 rf coil is used.

XP will not see your ftdi usb cable with out the driver. you have to
Download the drive and install it on XP before plugging the cable in
http://www.ftdichip.com/FTDrivers.htm is where you can pull the driver...
install it and then plug in your usb cable and you should be good to go...
--
Here is a few questions.
1) are you running from a external battery or the internal aa batts.
2) have you run a check on the cables to make sure there are no
crimps/bends/breaks in the line with a volt meter ot cable tester or such
3) what is your external power source ? anything under 13.8v
all you need for smd is solder paste/glue and you put it down on the
board and lay the SMD and the heat the SMD up and it will ad hear to the
board.

You don't need an elaborate USB sound card, but using one avoids
making mistakes.
You do if you use the I/Q port and a laptop as most mic inputs on
laptops are mono.
so using a usb sound card should give you stereo mic inpu for i/q audio.
If you check and make
sure the usb has stersio mic
is there a way to add to the firmware a power detect mode that if your
on say 12 running 8 watts and power goes out and it drops to 5 watts out
to have it reset to 8 watts when the power comes back ?

Locking the firmware would be wrong. this is not just a ham

well look at a netbook . or a small tablet pc and use a external
battery and not a inverter.
I have talked to people that use as netbook and a 12v 7Ah batt and spend
almost 9 hours contesting.
and on a 12v 17Ah deep cycle marine battery. you can go a day or 2 with
a kx3 and a netbook.
You can also look at linux on a beaglebone black or a raspi. wich
are low power arm pc..

99.8% of all new computers will no longer have serial ports USB is the
standard now.
there are ways to get around this get a usb to serial cable or look at
edge port usb to multi serial port units they came in 2/4/8 port units.
and then look at heavy duty usb cables with the good shielding
if your running windows then use tinyvnc

is there a way to add a option under the firmware to show what the
current batt charge status is ?
so you know if you need to charge or not.
also I have a 12v 4.58 amp power supply I am using and I get a lower
supply warning when I try to
charge the batt with the radio in standby mode
would also be a nice option to see a symbol to show if your on batt or
plugged-in like on a laptop.
but I have a feeling this is a short coming of the lcd and firmware ?

I would open the unit and check that no boards/cables came lloose.
next I would plug a dummy load on and recalibrate it.
then I would also put a wire antenna on it and tune to 7.251 or 7.200
and listen.
then report back what you swr meter says the s unit is at in receive

I wish there was a way for when setting memories for use on psk31 or
other data modes you could set power/mic/acl and have it save in the mem
