Joshua,
The K3 filter selection and the KX3 filter selection are two different
"animals".
Yes, both will help with AGC 'pumping' in the presence of strong signals
close to your operating frequency, but there is much more to the K3
filter selection than for the KX3. The KX3 provides the KXFL3

strong BC signals and will have

As I plan on adding a K3 down the line, It might not be a bad idea to get
it when I order instead of later...
Now I just need the money to order it...

The KXFL3 decision is pretty easy. If you plan to use the KX3 only with
simple antennas (random wires, loaded verticals, magnetic loops) and for
casual QSOs, you don't really need it. Unwanted signals will be weak enough
not to overload the DSP. If you plan to use the KX3, even sometimes, with

Joshua,
If you have thoughts of doing the extended calibration, know that is not
done at the factory for either kits or factory assembled units. OTOH, if
you are contemplating the standard calibration, order the filter at the
same time as your KX3 and the two will be calibrated together for yo

KXFL3 dual-Passband Roofing Filter? Should I order it now, or
see if I need it and order it later?

Thanks Walter. I had forgotten that Rob Sherwood had tested it. Interesting.
The dynamic range looks pretty good compared with other rigs even without
the KXFL3. I don't have enough technical background to understand the
significance of footnote v, though. Perhaps some knowledgeable person could
Yes, it is possible to quantify it. See the measurements with and without the
roofing filter here (you'll need to check the footnotes):

Has anyone tried the KX3 both with and without the KXFL3?
The manual says it results in a "significant
performance improvement in rejecting extremely strong interfering signals
that are just a few kHz away from
the received signal."
I wonder if it's possible to quantify that?

Has anyone heard a ballpark price for this KX3 option?
I got to hold the KX3 over the weekend at the HamJam2011 in ATL...a
very dangerous thing to do! ;-)
