Bill:
There is a mic preamp schematic on the Elecraft website. Just go to
"Builders Resources", then "KSB2 SSB Adaptor Notes", and finally look at
"Microphone Preamp".

The stock HC4/5 elements (non Elecraft versions) in
their basic form produce a minus 65 db output. This
is sufficient for use with some rigs other than an
Elecraft. I use them straight with my IC-746Pro
without a preamp. The Heil items sold by Elecraft for

I bought mine from HRO in Burbank - they called Heil while I was waited, and
asked his advice. He said that I should use the Icom headset with the
Kenwood cable, which I bought. I've gotten very good audio reports over
time. I also use the Heil footswitch. Tom W6EIJ

My first SSB QSO with my 10-watt K2 was with a DX station who said he
wouldn't have picked me put of the pilleup except for my "excellent
audio".
I was (and still am) using the Heil HC4 dynamic mike element which I
retrofitted into my old station mike.

HC-4 and HC-5 were dynamic elements. Maybe I'm wrong.

Hi All,
Just ordered a K2 last week and am looking forward to
melting some solder and having some fun!
I see that Elecraft offers a Heil Proset tailored to
the K2. Ironically, I bought a Proset just a few
months ago with the HC4 element.
Can anyone tell me how superior the mic in the
