problem was the phone jack on my push to talk button was not working
if I pushed it too far into the heaset adapter supplied by Heil.

You have too many devices involved to say whether this is a problem with
your setup and cables or whether it is a K3 problem.
Do you have anything connected between the Microkeyer and the K3 PTT
input? If you are going to get PTT to the K3, you must have something
connected to the PTT
