Sounds like the old list of: if, and, or, nor, =, etc. we use in coding.
If you do not do it correctly and in order, things do not come out well.
Just more complexities to deal with - by habit: KAT500 on, KPA500 on,
then the K3 (which brings up the P3) on.
Reverse order when shutting down.

You don't need to have the KAT500 switched on before switching on the K3 -
all you need to do is have the KAT500's power supply on (and connected to
it) before you switch the K3 on. I power my K3 and KAT500 from the same
13.8v power supply so that when I switch on the K3 the KAT500 already has
I didn't realize that either, so I should buy Fred's KPA500/KAT500 book.
I just made the configuration change in the KAT500 program to always turn it
on when 12V is applied. It now comes on when my master power switch turns
on the small Astron P/S for accessories and my RS-35M for the K3. I turn
I was astounded when I read the caution in the KAT500 manual saying to always
power it before the K3. Strange indeed.

When I powered the K3 up this morning I was greeted with the following behavior:
When it powered up, the LCD display was on (yellow) but nothing was displayed
No Audio
No band data sent to the computer
Nothing on the P3.
The K3 could not be powered off with its power switch.

Hi Alan,
I had a K3 load lockup a few weeks ago and I used the technique described in
the help menu in the K3 Utility Program. Search for MCU Boot Loader
Troubleshooting. Full instructions will be displayed.
I also removed the RS232 link between the K3 and P3 so that the K3 had a

Sorry, major typo. Yes, you need K3 Utility.
I think the utilities are smarter than I am at this time of day and
would warn you if you got them mixed up.

Hi Alan,
Sounds like the firmware upgrade didn't take--possibly due to a
brownout--and has to be retried.
First get out of KX3 Utility and power the PC off/on, in case there's
an issue with the serial ports.
Next, unplug the K3, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. If the
firmware has

Hmm.. who knows, strange things can happen but I only use the Mac K3 utility
and use it to install beta and alpha versions all the time with not hitches.

Well, it turned out to be the Mac, or the OS X version of K3 Utility, or some
combination of the two that got it's brain frazzled. At Gary Surrency's
suggestion, I snaked USB repeater cables to the radio room from my office, and
installed the Windows version of K3 Utility and Keyspan drivers
I'm glad to know 4.03 loaded fine elsewhere :-)
I doubt the current problem has anything to do with 4.03. Something appears to
have died a sudden death during the upload process. No other firmware version
will load the MCU and pass verification either, and every attempt gives the
same error
Worked fine here. 73, Guy.

Roger,
This is probably a "dumb answer", but are you following the directions to
load a Beta version as opposed to the "regular" ones???

Tried to update to 4.03, but was unable to "SAVE" so was not able to "OPEN" nor
to EXTRACT". This made it impossible to "LOAD".
