a free replacement.
Recently, one of the smaller knobs split in two. It was entirely made of
plastic. I ordered a replacement, which turned out to have a metal
insert. Clearly, these should have had the insert in the first

I was about ready to order a VFO A knob which I think is acceptable on VFO B
but figured the KX3 one would be better.
I also had a cracked VFO B knob. Looked like the insert was too tight and
stressed the knob. That was quickly replaced by Elecraft a couple of years ago.
Tried it - it doesn't really interfere with any other controls, but
"hangs off" the bottom of the front panel by a couple of mm, and so
looks a bit odd. It feels quite good, though.
I noticed, before I even started to remove it, that my VFO B knob has cracked :(

I no longer have an 817, but I can tell you that the knob was definitely
smaller than the K3 VFO B knob. In fact, I increased the size of it by
installing a rubber crutch tip. :-)
You might consider a K2 knob. It will hang a little low, but other than
that it should clear everything els
There are times when I'd like to spin the VFO B knob on the K3 a bit
more quickly than its small size allows, or do so continuously without
ratcheting my wrist. I noticed that the guy who sells adhesive knob
dimples also offers a replacement knob with a small crank for the FT-817.
