Dave,
It's worth removing the front panel assembly, cleaning the connector pins,
applying some 'Contralube' (obtainable from Maplins) to the pins and
re-assembling.
A year ago I had all sorts of problems with my K3, including that which you
describe. The above measures completely fixed it.

Maybe John, it is serial 80 from November 2007. Does that problem also
reduce the overall output as it is low power when using the LP PA as
well.

My K3/100 has developed an intermittent transmit fault. The power
drops to a very low, but not zero, level at any power setting using
either the LP or HP PA.
The symptoms/set up are as follows:
Mode CW
Using the KPA500 with it (not sure that is relevant)
ATU not in circuit
Power is low as display
