Encoders can be cleaned. I've done it in several radios, several brands. It is
usually necessary to open the radio, remove the encoder. Then carefully open
the encoder, clean the wiper contacts and the stationary contacts with contact

I noticed today that when I tried to fine adjust the mic level with the
mic/keyer/pwr encoder that it may display the mic level but won't change it
or if it does it's very erratic. The response is the same with the keyer
speed in CW mode and when attempting to adjust the power level. Turning
István,
The optical encoder used for VFO A on the KX3 was custom designed for Elecraft,
and may not be generally available. Prior to this, there was no optical encoder
available from any manufacturer that was this small, while still having
excellent mechanical properties and long life. Even if
Could someone help me who is the manufacturer of the encoder? Elecraft
shipping cost is extremely high, same value and size shipping cost is
about 20 USD from CA, Elecraft ships it for about 60 USD. Really strange.

Does anyone out there know if the Elacraft encoder upgrade kit for the KX3
comes with the allen wrench to remove and install the knob. Thank you.

I don't think so -- you get an allen key with the KX3 itself (both factory and
kit versions), as this is needed to adjust the drag on the tuning knob. If you
have lost your key, when you order the encoder upgrade, in the comments field
ask them to add an allen key to your order (mail parts at
Hi Richard,
The Allen wrench is a 5/64, which you could get at a local hardware/tool
store. The encoder upgrade does not come with an Allen wrench, my upgrade kit
did not.

Newbie here with KX3-K #3049. My encoder shaft had 2 very tight spots as I
turned the shaft - even without the knob attached. I hoped it would go away
but after a week of use it was still very tight. I removed encoder and could
see the C-clip and the washer underneath rotating on the threaded

Similar scratchy on mine. Per someone else's suggestion, I removed the

I have the KX3 #1877. It came with AFX MOD already set to delay.
I still have VFO A tuning noise beginning at 20M. Sometimes low on 20.
Sometimes moderate. But, as you move up the bands, it gets progressively worse.
This tops my very short list of things I'd like changed. I really hope it's a
Mike,
I picked up on your horrible antenna words.
Yes, with no antenna, or a horrible antenna, you may hear some VFO
tuning noise in the KX3, but that is usually covered up by band noise
with a normal antenna connected (except on 6 meters and maybe 10 meters
where the band noise is low).
You
Got the new KX3 finally. Took about 4 hours to put it together and calibrate
the radio. Impressive. With small laptop power supply able to get 10 watts
easily. I experience the encoder hash for the first time yesterday. I had a
rather long QSO with local ham and after signing I noticed the
My KX3 encoder makes a mechanical scraping sound when I turn the tuning
knob. This happens with and without the knob attached. It doesn't sound
like anything's horribly broken, just maybe slightly not right.
Is it normal, and if not, is the encoder user-serviceable?
Thanks,

Andrew,
I've got this too, at first I thought it was just the rubbing against the
felt pad but it's deeper than that, it's not causing any problems right now
and is quite minor, but still a bit concerned.

I'm not too concerned about it - just wanted to find out if mine was the
oddball.
(I think the encoder is not the ball-bearing type like that used in the K3,
so it's not going to be as smooth)

I also have this 'scrapping' noise - very light and does not happen at the same
spot every turn. Are there bearings in encoder - maybe a ball or roller with a
flat spot on it that drags when the flat spot comes around? Or a bearing
separator that is bent somehow?

No bearings on this encoder (I think it's been asked before). Just the
nature of this encoder, it sounds like. Not going to worry about it.

The KX3's encoder has a high-quality, lubricated sleeve bearing. These
are used in some radios targeted at mobile operation, like the TS-480.
It seemed like a reasonable choice for the KX3, which will often be
jostled around during field or mobile use. And it fits :)

Dunno if it was the same cause, but I, too, had a scraping noise when
turning the VFO knob. It didn't happen on every turn and it moved around
the circumference, so it didn't seem to be the knob bottoming out on the
clear plastic bezel. But it was. I removed the rubber ring around the knob,
