I bought the standard mic from Elecraft with my K3 kit. I thought it quite
an expensive option.
It works perfectly well, but it is somewhat bulky.
The K3 has such a vast range of audio adjustment on rx and tx I have tried
many other mics on it and all work perfectly well. I am very particular

I agree. I've been using $10 computer headsets with electret microphone
elements (they are lightweight, have foam ear pads, and long mic booms)
with my K3. I use conservative settings of MIC =20 and CMP =20, with
MIC SEL = rP.L bIAS. The computer headsets have 3.5mm plugs that fit

Thanks to the exceptionally versatile EQ, connectorization, and
range of settings, almost any good mic will work well with a K3 if
you wire it properly and make good use of those settings. My cu
In preparation for getting my K3 I think I might have to buy a new mic. I have
the Icom desk mic for my Pro III and I also have the Heil Pro-Set Quiet

So, do I need to buy a new mic or can I use these if I fashion together some

Hi All,
My K3 kit will be here shortly and I have a microphone question. I have
a Kenwood MC-60 mic. Does anybody have any info on configuring it
for the K3? Also, any comments on how it would perform with the K3.
Thanks,

Eric,
I've used the Heil Pro Set with the HC-5 for some years now, and have received
many unsolicited raves about my audio. The HC-5 is NOT a "full-range" (flat)
element. It is expertly tailored for voice frequencies, but is not as highly
constricted as the HC-4. It is very enjoyable to listen
Hi Geoff --
We used Heil HC-5 mic elements (the so-called "full range" element,
not the "DX operation" element). Mic gain and compression were both set
at 15.
A few operators were caught fidgeting with the mic/compression
settings, but we tried to discourage changes to these settings.
when i wired both my k2 for Icom mics everything was working fine till.
I used the icom sm-8 .It also grabs dc from the up/down circuit to
power the mic, rather than using the dc bias on the audio line. Had
no audio and it took me a while to figure it all out..

And if nothing else, the K3 manual has been out since September or October.
While we all waited (and continue to) for our K3s, there's been plenty of time

I have used a Kenwood MC-43S microphone with my K3 from day one. The
microphone is 100% compatible with the K3 and gets excellent audio
reports, it's also one of the cheapest fist microphones on the market.
It also works just fine with my K2.

Hi Charles,
We have been using this pin out for microphones on our rigs since we
introduced the K2 nine years ago. It is 100% compatible with Kenwood
dynamic microphones in addition to ours. It was picked so there would be
a wide range of existing mics you could use right when we introduced th
ones.

Tom,
The K3 is wired for the *now* Elecraft standard mic pinout. It happens
to be *compatible* with the Kenwood pinout (except for pins 5 and 6).
You should look up the pinout (and pin usage) for any microphone that
you would intend to use with the K3 (or any other transceiver), and know

Hi All,
I have access to a Kenwood MC-80 (made for the Kenwood 850).
Is this compatible with the K3?
