At least you appear to have isolated the issue.
The 310.44 release only (to the best of my knowledge) fixed a security
issue:

so it seems somewhat strange that it appears to have introduced a bug
for you.

I uninstalled kmod-nvidia-310.44-1 and installed kmod-nvidia-310.*40 *instead
and I can now get to X.

I don't think the issue is memory/disk related. The symptoms I've seen
point towards an issue with kmod-nvidia/Centos 64/my nvidia card (GeForce
GTX675m). If I insert my last good backup disc ( Centos6.3 /
2.6.32-279.22.1.el6.x86_64), I get to X every time.
Currently with kmod-nvidia-310.44-1/2.6.

Still, it's now hit and miss whether or not I can get into X. If I reboot
the machine 4 times successively, I'll get to X-Win 2 of those times and
the other 2 times, my screen just hangs. Not sure why this is...

Hi,
Some progress with this. I went to runlevel 3 and removed kmod-nvidia and
dependencies. I then rebooted and re-installed kmod-nvidia and
dependencies. Whilst re-installing, there were some errors displayed whilst
yum was installing kmod-nvidia. The errors were:
