Turns out this was a local configuration problem. My ~/.emacs has the
agenda to appt integration with kdialog/zenity code in it, and each
time org loaded this code would call the agenda to create the list of
appointments.

I could be wrong, but org-exp-block.el already provides support for any
Graphviz command since you can add the option -K as an argument to dot.
Then again, I can have mistaken your point.

When I change todo states on a new node or clock in, org
correctly (for me) inserts a logbook drawer at column 0. I
like this behavior, as it is a consistent place (several
