Looks neat -- too bad I have no use for it :-P
If you have the comp file and you want to view the documentation, just
run
comp --view-doc gear4.comp
If you want to install it so that it is viewable with "man gear4",

Gentlemen,
This is my gear shifting component. It probably is not the best
and may not be completely functional. I will test it on my machine
this week. It is somewhat functional on a sim machine.

I'm pleased to announce the next bugfix release of the EMC 2.2 series,
version 2.2.5. This version fixes user-reported problems and adds a new
hardware driver.
The new packages are now available in the package repository. If you
already installed 2.2.0 or 2.2.1, this is available as an update.
NI makes a 96 I/O pci card. I picked one up off ebay and it has been
sitting here for a couple of years.
If anyone is interested contact me off list.

Involving 3rd party software such as X-key will contribute a lot to

It seems quite straight-forward to connect it to a parport, and use the
motion inputs for jogwheels & selects (you probably need a mux or demux,
I didn't look too closely).

I like your way of thinking. Don't forget to aticipate any audio
processing blocks in between your software and sound card output. There
are many processors and filters on the input ADC for example. I don't
believe there is much of anything on the output path, but I would check.
