I have a few random thoughts.
Try running memtest86 overnight. It's on the initial boot menu.
Since it drops out of X, check the X log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log or
similar).

I have noticed that perhaps one time in five Linux will partially
shutdown during milling. It's a bit hard to describe but the Gnome
desktop is replaced with a text screen of what looks like the tail end
of the bootup sequence:

Dirk,
What you are seeing is the waypoint function of G28.
G28 X5 Z5 will move to X5 and Z5 from the present position then move to X0 Z0.
This is for obstacle avoidance.
G28 will always end up in the home position.

G28 goes to a predefined position (home as defined in parameters 5156-5166).
To make G28 go to 0,0,100 you must home the machine there which will become
0,0,0. Then a G28Z0 with no space will home the Z axis only. The space between
the G28 and the axis must call up an undocumented feature...

I just noticed on my Hardinge lathe, the AXIS position display now shows
Y, in addition to X and Z. When I home Z, the homed icon shows up on Y
instead. Z updates position properly. Y stays at zero. I know I should
check the update logs for relevant changes but in the mean time, does
anyone know wh

Hi all, well, just deleted my question. When double checking all the facts,
reproducing the problems, I got some clue about what was going wrong. But
there is still 1 thing unclear. My postprocessor, NX5, made with
postbuilder, automatically adds a G28 at the start of the program. Since I

As a PC tech, I've seen several older Compaqs, especially laptops do as you
describe.
Sometimes they will freeze for seconds at a time then continue.
And with a freshly and properly installed OS with good drivers, etc.
I know this isn't what you want to hear but consider replacing the machine.

Yeah, not much said about EMC there. And there was a mention of Realtime

NT is a pretty old technology and; where do you get it? I bet it ain't free
either.
Looks like it might evolve into a really good site. Hopefully, they'll get

That is good news. If you do break anything, please let me know. I'll
sort out the extension problem in the next release.

Hi Eric,
I replied before but it didn't seem to get through. I think I have found
a problem with the sheetcamlibs package. Try
downloading and installing the sheetcamlibs package again.
If you still get the error, open a terminal and enter the following:
sudo dpkg --force-remove-reinstreq sheetc
Yes, that is on my to-do list. Linux and Windows file dialogs work
slightly differently in the way they handle extensions and it looks like
I haven't fixed the g-code dialog.
Thanks,
Les
