Thank you all for your excellent suggestions. I have Inkscape working with
the Gcodetools extensions generating toolpaths.The bezier curve tool was
confusing at first, but I've used it to outline the shapes I needed. I am
looking forward to trying some of your other hints too.

Chris' page tells us to use the '-l' option to turn on filling, but I
can't find any reference for what type of argument the flag wants.
I've assumed its a numeric argument and tried powers of 10 ranging
