Try this: in /etc/default/grub, change
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash lapic"

EMC does not start on a livecd fresh install.
Looks like a protection ownership problem.
Computer is an IBM T41 laptop that has run earlier versions of emc-2
without any problems.
