In case you installed .deb
xinitrc is only used whit startx. I don't know how ubuntu handles services,
but I think you'll need to remove gdm from your runlevel, and add entrance.
But you can use gdm with e17, if you create the session file mentioned
above.

and I could configure gnome to use e17 as wm. But I have the following
