Greetings,
Just got my EOS-30 and battery pack last Sunday. I'm thinking of
upgrading my flash (380EX) since I shoot indoors quite a bit, and the
AF assist light only covers the centre focusing point. Since the 550EX
covers all 45 FPs on the EOS-3/1V, am I right in assuming its AF

To my knowledge, the light loss only affects how you see, not the amount of
light reaching the film.

Thanks John DuBois, just what I want to hear. The product that I use comes
with a container said to be clean & safe patented no-splash-grid, so I think
I don't have any problem.
The first one I tried came with an apple scent. Can you imagine an EOS-1n
strongly smelling like that???

Right, I saw your reply, and I replied in turn that I had done some test
shots that pretty clearly show (to my untrained eye, anyway) that despite
the master flash being set to OFF, it was firing *at exposure time*, as
shown in my photos. I get the idea clearly enough--it's pretty simple,
really,
That is my experience as well with the Elan II and also 550 Ex and Ef 500.

Hi Karen,
A projected grid would be nice, though it might be kind of distracting
(and maybe a little blinding...).
I did some tests when I put in my grid screen, and I actually don't
think you really lose any light, except perhaps in special situations.
I tested using the cameras meter by putti
Oh, in addition to my last post about the light loss (or lack thereof),
I did want to mention that the more clear "pop" into and out of focus
might actually make it easier for you, Rick, to see the image. The
older technology screens also tend to have better contrast.

Hi Rick,
No, you don't lose them. Those little boxes are projected onto the
screen with a laser of some sort. Don't worry about that, they are
built into the rest of the camera, not the screen.

No. The Elan II screen is not user-replaceable.

It is up to the master unit whether to fire its own flash, not to the
camera. Regardless of which Type A EOS body you use, if the

Hi All,
Some years ago, in Macau, China, I bought a Toshiba Drybox to keep the
moisture out of my Canon cameras. It worked OK for sometime but then the
motorized mechanism needed to be replaced. Two years later, I was already in
Portugal, it happenned again, and this time it never worked as well a
