the energy that goes into pressuring the propellants isnt waisted
that energy is converted to KE too (through the injectors and as pressure
drop across the nozzle)
if we are assuming perfect environment of course
i think the reason it stops spinning is "real world" friction etc

why would you use square nozles?
the plates would be laser/water cut (presumably something like 8mm?)
then a whole bunch of machined up round nozles stuck in
if you got creative with your machining and nozle design you wouldnt even
need to weld the nozles in
it'd all "just fit"

as with most things ion engines have their uses and they are good at what
they do. there are however some areas where they arent so good.

that as the grain, and you could have a litterally open source powered

the environment of the TPS seems like it could fairly easily cause a

so tell them about the dangers.
its "people like you" who keep rocketry so tightly regulated though for the
large part it is safer than filling your car up at a crowded service
station. say this person listened to your advice "don't do rocketry, you
will die and btw you and your teacher are just so
yeah, way to encourage people there.
most people aren't too fond of loosing their limbs and when the dangers are
pointed out will take steps to prevent harm. rather than just saying in

you wouldn't even need a fully fledged chute for that stability thing, a

could start it short and let it extend as the vehicle went higher if you
felt like it, it would probbably have a fair bit less drag and might do the
job a

they are an open source group that have plans (and kits) for 20Mhz digital
ocilloscope complete kit runs to $395
anyway they have some funky A/D boards in order to do this and i was
thinking perhaps you could stick them (the A/D boards) onto your gyro's
you guys are just using the raw IMU data for position information?
even a simple kalman filter or dogified version of it might have helped

better way of doing things. (Solving the problem is better than working

Just for reference this is the same/simmilar design as the mercury system.
differrence being they used pure O2 at 5psi. that worked for missions up to
gordon coopers 34hours and 20 minutes.
I am just struck by the similarity between what is happening now and the
mercury 7 sub-orbital flight

why fly the heater at all?
if the tank is at the right temperature or thereabouts it shouldnt change
that quickly put a sensor in your tank and the heaters in a jacket on the
outside when its hot enough drop the jacket and hit the button

just 2 small things
a swirl sufficent to mix propellants would be a "Bad Thing" (TM pat pend) in
a rocket with a single motor, the torque it would put on the rocket would
probbably be signficant. i think it may be better to have the configuration

cough hack ahem
I cant really decide on just one witty remark/retort to that so I'll trust
in your ability to choose the one you feel most apt.
even a few hours warning could be significant in reducing "direct" deaths IE
people could get underground / basments etc (think "duck and cover") a few
minutes could potentially save a significant number of lives. Whilst the
devestation would still be unthinkablle if it saves a few thousand people
