Doesn't matter, if the workstation is requesting X authentication, there may
be time spent in figuring out that X isn't there.

I have been having problems getting knoppix to work on my computers. The
computer hiccupped did a warm boot and the knoppix cd I had left in the
drive kicked in. It loaded properly. I don't know why it wasn't working
before. I rebooted warm and cold.
Second computer BIOS was not set properly (

Yes, this was one of the annoying things with enlightenment, until I figured
it out (ie, became enlightened to the situation).
Look at ~/.enlightenment/...e_session-XX and
~/.enlightenment/...e_session-XX.snapshots.0
I suggest renaming these two files and restarting enlightenment. Set up

Seems like a bad Idea to mess with the server, when its only one workstation
that has a problem (and even on that workstation, its only the slack system
(not the suse, or the windows) that has a problem.

I used knoppix 3.1 on dual boot box with a corrupted ppartition table among
other problems to burn a cd data backup last night.

OK, now its back again. I killed off inetd on the workstation, but still get
the delay :(
Killing it on the server caused the machine to refuse connections from any
computer (this is what I expected... no big surprise...)
somehow it has something to do with the slackware workstation... but what?
Hmm... ok, I have inetd running on both the gateway box, and the workstation.
I killed it on the workstation, and was able to connect right up. I then
rebooted the workstation (not killing off inetd) and connected right up.
Now I cant get get the delay, and Im totally unsure why!

(x)inetd? The delay
I forgot to mention that once I make one telnet/ssh connection, subsequent
connections pop right up (not wait), but if I close all connections, a new
connection causes a long delay.

I have another issue on this computer. Telnetting or sshing (but not ftping)
under my slack system seems to take a long time to connect (like a minute).
This only occurs in my slack system on one box (other boxes dont have this
problem, and other systems on this box do not have this problem, so
Im having a strange issue with enlightenment. It keeps "remembering" the wrong
settings. At one point I did a remember settings with a few applications on
my desktop, but now dont want them. Ive tried closing those apps, and
remember settings, close e, and start e, but they seem to persist! infa

This has been discussed pretty thoroughly on the gentoo-user list and in
the forums. You need to

John,
Nettraverse is usually about three kernel patches behind, so prepare to
compile your own kernel if you're running something recent. I doubt they
have precompiled kernels for gentoo anyway...
It's not that hard to patch a generic kernel for win4lin.

Great explanation, Bob -- thanks! I was using mozilla itself at first,

remote X over SSH, I expect window-forwarding, yet this solution is much

The mirrors were very congested last night. There's a temporary copy

Are you running Mozilla (or a derivative) as your browser? Here's
how it works, and it's not Gnome
I made these observations and assumptions:
I tried to boot knoppix on three separate computers.
I recently loaded RH 8.0 on these all of these computers in a dual boot
configuration.
The boot process w/RH was flawless and there have been no modifications to
the BIOS.
