I don't think reinstalling will fix the problem. k9copy does not have all
its dependencies set correctly. The problem will still be there in a fresh
install
It's going from bad to (much) worse. I wonder if it's time to wipe and
reinstall.

Ryan, the ethernet port is on the motherboard.
The MAC stays 00:...:00 even with a live CD.
It's a known problem with "certain broken motherboards"
as discussed in the thread I linked to.
I'm guessing that the MAC address was stored in the CMOS,

Is it always "00:00:00:00:00:00"? That OS could be enforcing a mac address.
Use a boot cd and see if the address is still "00:00:00:00:00:00". If it is

Thanks for all the advice. In fact, the power cable was loose at the

But the original problem remains. The Ethernet interface comes

I have one that restarts itself periodically due to a flaky video card

Integrated nic? Assuming the problems are related, it sounds like a bad
motherboard. But a couple on things to check would be to mobo
grounding(loose screws) and test the power supply. If they both check out
it's very likly the mobo.
