It's been a few years, but I don't recall having any problems with
clean-installing a dual boot set-up so long as WinXP is installed
first. But it's possible I was running WinXP on FAT32 then rather than
NTFS. I don't remember.
At the same time, I think it's far more useful than dual-booting to

Ouch. I spent more than 2 hours on one of my futile install attempts.
You've just said you can do in your spare time what it took me weeks to
puzzle out.

I'm a hardcore Unix bigot, my first Linux install was sometime in the
late '90's when Slackware was the shit and I had to change the device
driver assembly code and recompile the kernel to get my NIC working
(on thin-net!) So, I'm in now way a newbie. However, if you want to

re resizing run chkdsk on your NTFS partitions to
get everything in good order. Also, defrag a few times if you've been running a
Windows system for a while before resizing.
That be all,

Yes. Which is why this worked with 95/98/NT/2000 too. I started using this
method to install dual boot back during my time at Symantec, which was 1993

I haven't had a problem resizing a windows partition in several years. The
partition tools for Linux have gotten MUCH more intelligent in the recent
past. You might not be able to shrink the Windows partition as much as you
want to, but as long as you let the tool tell you the maximum it is OK.

In my experience, the boot loader and the first couple of files loaded for
