I regret that I have unnecessarily tarnished the reputation of Kubuntu. I found the problem that was causing the crashes. There was a problem in how I customized /etc/profile and other shell startup files. After a rather painful debug session I was able to narrow the problem down to those files.

As a followup, the crashes (or immediate exits) listed below apply only when the terminal program is started from a menu or icon. If I start it from a running terminal, there is no problem. Of course, that still doesn't help with KDE, since I don't have a working terminal program there. I check

As a general rule, I've found that the best way to get any of the ubuntu variations is to install a base ubuntu system and then apt-get the appropriate package. (kubuntu, xubuntu, etc.) Both xubuntu and kubuntu leave certain things out in an attempt to be lighter weight and fit on a single CD. I'

I just installed Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu 7.10 Gutsy. There are problems. Under KDE all three terminal programs listed in the menus crash immediately. (konsole, xfce4-terminal, gnome-terminal) I didn't try xterm because I couldn't find it on the menus. Also under KDE thunderbird crashes immediate
