You just convinced me not to buy the Crowns. Too much risk. Trojans are
more proven, so if I have to spend $2k on a battery pack, I need it to last.
Lots of cars on EVAlbum have T1275's and the consensus is that with 12 of
them I should get 25 miles (max) as long as I stay out of the cold. Many

I remembered some discussion of Crown batteries, so I dug down into the EVDL
archives. Most of this is from 2008.

I found trucks and buses on those previous searches, but did not include
them as I was focusing on the controller you asked about. Here are a
couple with images of them in use:

I needed to be more specific. I am not putting the new pack in the 1983
Cordia (AKA Pumpkin). That is my old car (that I still drive every day). I
decided it wasn't worth the effort and cost to maintain. I bought someone
else's conversion which is a much nicer base car and better built. Also,
I am a fan of LiFePO4 batteries. They are lighter in weight than their NiCd
(NiMH) counterparts. They also have a higher stored energy density than
almost any other technology. Unfortunately, they don’t have the amount of
history in autos that the Ni-based rechargeable batteries have. That mean

Yep ,The logic behind it was that the diesel engine weighed that much

Flooded NiCd cells tend to be very durable. They can sit for years totally
flat and still come back fine, unlike lead batteries. In fact, flat is the

A sepex motor can do great regen.
I agree! I used a sepex motor (Aircraft starter-generator) in my first
EV, with a home-made contactor controller. Awesome 500 amp regen, even
from this "tiny" 70 lbs generator! It was enough to skid the back tires
on dry pavement
