The issue with the PFC charger was corrected shortly after I complained.
(I complained bit too loudly and publicly in retrospect. I apologized
then and I do again now.)
You can now set the PFC charger to "latch" the end-of-charge timer and
not reset.
It is still a very good idea to set a maxim

Thanks for your reassurance, David and Evan. I'll try charging them in a
24-battery string, and see what happens!

Hi David, I typed "pfc restart" into gmail and amazingly it came up with
the post I was thinking of, from 2005. I hope Bill doesn't mind me
reposting it. There was a very long discussion leading on from this too.

The one case I know of involved an unregulated bad boy charger

Nope. And if I had any, I'd be using them. :-\

Got any STM5-180s? Or 200s? I could use 36-40. Good ones that is. Dach

I doubt this too. I've never heard of these cells being damaged or
overheating through *correct* charging, although I'm only familiar with the
water-cooled variety.
I have heard of one Saft pack being cooked. IIRC it was a Manzanita PFC
charger, something to do with it restarting as the voltage

I've heard of this happening from gross overcharging, but NEVER when they
were "charged to spec" (in accorda

Thanks for your detailed response, David.
I do have the tech manual you referred to. I understand the single-battery
charging regime.
My concern is equalization. The person I got these batteries from fried
individual batteries -- I mean internally melted! -- by charging them to spec

Hi Jay, and welcome to the EVDL.
Here's the technical manual for Saft STM-180 batteries:
http://www.evdl.org/docs/STM5-180tech.pdf
Unlike some of Saft's other NiCds, I'm pretty sure these were designed for
road-going electric vehicles. They were used in the Chrysler TEVans, if I'm

I have come upon a 26 kWh set of SAFT 4.180 flooded-cell NiCd batteries.
These are industrial quality, and should last a long time, if properly cared
for. But I know they are subject to damage if over-charged. All the BMSs I've
seen are designed for lithium. I have the manual, but I'm worried ab
