Being in the U.S, I assume you're using a standard U.S. keyboard. Reconfigure it to U.S. international keyboard. (If you use Mandrake, the Control Center can do this, otherwise check your distro's tools.) The U.S. international keyboard gives you dead keys which allow you to produce letters with d
