JP is absolutely right. I have happily run evolution under CDE, but you
need so many GNOME components and libraries that you really need to have
the whole of GNOME installed even though you aren't actually using it as
your desktop.

You'll need large parts of gnome for this.
Assuming you have gc and some GNU tools installed on your Solaris
system, it should work. We use Solaris 8 here at Ximian to debug/purify
Evolution all the time so I know it can be done.
