.You can use Native NT Backup Full or incremental to remove them
safely.
You can also enable circular logging (not recommended either)

You don't say what version of exchange, but certainly with ex2000 you can set
the properties of your storage group to use circular logging. I suggest you
read up on the M$ support site the implications of doing this.
