I'm describing a real-world situation - he's lost the server a couple of
times; he's never lost data. Why should he spend the extra cash for a
backup solution that he wouldn't use? [1]

Anyhoo, Office 2000 with Outlook 2002 sounds like a bad mix to me.

a recovery server at the correct version, and not to mention the
necessity of taking a full backup both before and after applying

the version is and which service pack I am using? I've had a look at
the registry: HKLM\software\micorsoft\exchange but nowt there and I've
also run hfnetchk but that only came up with windows 2000 service pack 2
