i know this maybe a dumb question, but do I just point the external smtp
connectory to the smarthost , enter credentials, and apply? will messages in
the queue update or do they have to be resent?

Not 100% at the moment, but the isp specifically told me that 20 is their limit

If you're going to be moving lots of large files that are going to blow up
your mail flow, why not use a FTP server to host the files and send the
person on the far end a link to the file.

I was already thinking about presenting that option to them , hopefully they
will be open to it- not to mention it will make the backups quicker
