If it was with Internet mail, it could be that his POP3 connection crapped
out, and it is leaving the message on the server. And then when it
retries, it downloads it again. You can have him connect to the server
using a POP3 viewer (like Lydia) and viewing the headers without touching
them.
clear up afterwards? What does _that_ mean, specifically. It only happens
for the first download of the day, or the duplicates majically dissapear?

It means messages will be duplicated when the user first checks email.
Thereafter messages received will not be duplicated.

make a long explanation short, the users are accustomed to downloading their
email to their laptops so they can do all their email as they travel and plug in
when they get to a hotel. Using .ost files and waiting for syncronization once
been well received.
