30 users isn't that many for an Exchange server but your hardware
configuration really depends on a lot of factors such as the type of
users you'll have (i.e. heavy users/light users), volume of traffic
received, what other services will be running on the exchange server
(i.e. virus scanner,

Generally I ask how much of a budget I have and then make sure I get as powerful a system as I can.
30 isn't alot of users. I've got 50 on an old HP 166 w/96megs - NT4, Ex5.5.

Agreed. If there is a budget you will be constrained by that. Sometimes
though the people with the purse strings have no idea how much things cost and
will ask IT to provide a quote. In that case, you can price a system based on
the specs you suggest as opposed

The HP
was here when I got here. Several years ago it was a decent machine,
spec-wise. Of course you wouldn't buy one like that now.
I
understand they don't always get it. I've just been adept at coming up
with a decent config off the Dell or HP sites, and give

Sorry forgot to add ... storage would be something like an 18GB Hard Drive
for the DB's (3 for RAID5) and 2 x 9GB
Go with Dell, HP, or IBM , 3-18 gig disk or 4-9 gig Raid. P3/866 with 1
meg. More memory is better. Four disks give smoother transitions if one
fails. It will cost about 5K which includes three years of service.
Compaq cost to much (about $1,200 more), limits your ability to use third

Compaq has an assortment of Server Sizer tools. They are not necessarily
the final word, nor is Compaq, but they might provide
performance in a RAID 5 config...

Isn't it better to have one container setup as a mirror for OS drive core
EXCHANGE installation and another RAID 5 container setup for logs, store,
etc.
I thought I read a tip here from someone noting not to RAID 5 the whole
shaabang
Yes, it is better but not needed and provides no significant benefit in this
situation.

We easily run 150 users per Exchange server with on Dell 2300
(P400/256MB/HW-RAID5) with average utilization below 20%, meaning that you
can run 30 users on darn near anything that is considered a low-level
server. Just check the list FAQ for suggestions on disk allocation and
virus software.

For performance and disaster recovery, without going into detail, the most
important installation aspect in my mind is to maintain the logs and
databases on separate spindles.

For a small business, those separate spindles can even be separate, single
IDE drives.
