The open source drivers may work for the GeForce 256 but they do not work
for the GeForce 2 Mobile that the Inspiron 8100 comes with even for just
running X windows. Believe me, I have one.

go to nVidia's Linux download site, get the drivers and configure them post

if you do a 'ls -l boot' look at the symlink of vmlinuz. it should
point to a vmlinuz-x.x.x-xmdk. the first 3 x's should give you the
kernal version (the last x is the mandrake build)
if you just installed 8.1 it should be 2.4.8
