I certainly hope that this is good news. A year ago I read that gcc optimization for my new P4 at the earliest was expected with gcc-3.1 around April 2002. Now I have installed gcc-3.1 as the default on my LM 8.2, and, yes, I did see that kernel-2.4.18-16mdk has been compiled with gcc-3.1.
