: [expert] Fw: hpt366 hinders boot, system crashes or
freezes
I just installed a BP6 w/ the hpt controller. While perusing the
manual, it states that certain PCI slots share resources with the hpt
controller. You might want to check into that.

HI Stuart,
I have an off-board hpt366 running fine. Unfortunately it's on a server
and running a custom (monolithic) kernel, so there will be some
differences.
I think (this is about 8 months ago now on 7.1) that passing the options
"ide2=dma ide3=dma" at boot time should allow the controller

OKay, What I did was only use the UDMA33 ports for cdrom's and use ide3 port
to run Win2k, and Mandrake 7.2. Win2k is the master 20.5 GB and Linux is on
the 15.3 GB slave drive. The system boots off of the MBR of the master drive.
Now in bios set the boot sequence to (EXT A C)
and the next
chances are that you click the harddisk optimization during install!
if you have that handy boot disk that the installation program asked you to
create boot from it and edit lilo.conf
remove the words "ide2=autotune ide3=autotune" the rerun lilo.
with any luck you can now boot normally without
