[expert] Tape backup - system freezes - any ideas?

My system freezes when doing a backup using HP Colorado tape drive. The hang or sometimes a reboot happens at any time during the backup process. My System: 192.168.0.1: Celeron 466, 256Ram, Mandrake 8.0, Promise Ultra UDMA 100 controller. Various HD Units. Home and other mount
