I would definately like to know the answer to that one myself. Are there
any hints in the man pages. I've looked there myself and to date haven't
seen anything. At least nothing that I remember. Think maybe I'll look
again.

See the steps for backing up a TiVo from the URL above. The relevant magic
is:
dd if=/dev/hdc bs=32k | gzip -9c | split -b 650m - hdcback_
which will back up the primary drive on the secondary ide port into 650MB
chuncks in the curren
