I know this subject has come up before but I'll ask again anyway - are there
any decent and reasonably cheap image databases out there? I already have
hundreds (thousands?) of scanned images which I need to index and sort so
I can find them. The database needs to be able to index a CD so it can
No problem.

I have yet to test this. I do have some uncut rolls and a real job that
interferes with my scanning time.
As soon as I figure this out, I will post it.

My expertise, with regard to components of resolution, pretty much stops
at the image plain. There are quite a few on this list that are far more
qualified to address the film issues. Wish I knew more.

Bob has anyone done a review on the rfs3600 yet? Or any first hand

Thanks this is good news to me, I am rally inept when it comes to try and

Just got one from B&H. So far, I am very impressed. All the color negs and
reversal that I have put through it have turned out beautifully without a
hint of color correction in photoshop. I am afraid, though, that they
slacked a little on their black and white film profiles to get this thing to

I just released VueScan 6.3.11 for Windows, Linux and Mac OS.
It can be downloaded from:

What's new in version 6.3.11:
* Fixed problem with infrared channel on the
Minolta Scan Elite
* Fixed problems with some scanners on Mac OS

Hi,
I've been using the Minolta Scan Dual II scanner for about 2.5 months now and
it mostly works fine. However when I scan (mildly) underexposed negatives the
resulting scans are horribly "grainy" and sometimes contain some color banding.
Two example scans can be found on:

Was this an idle enquiry, or is it meant to imply some comparison with pixels and
digital
images?
Since it's aimed at this list, and not on Photonet or Philip Greenspun's BB, I suspect
you really want
Bob,
I don't know first hand but will ask.

I've attached a rough list of the things I'm thinking about

send me e-mail (not posting to this list, but e-mailing

James,
thank you very much for that very clear and concise
explanation. Could you possibly add something about film speed and
grain size as I find this affects scan quality when using say 64 ASA
in the Summer and 400 ASA in the Winter.
Regards Chris MCBrien.

Thank you for all your replies.
I will tell more on some of the parts in which I didn't express myself
clearly and risk the danger of becoming even more unclear:
* I scan the negative film, not the print.
* XP2 seems to have a 'purple' mask instead of an orange mask.
* I was mo
